STERLING \u2014 The Select Board will contact the Zoning Board to endorse a \u201cone-and-done\u201d approach for food trucks that are continuing operations and have no complaints lodged against them.<\/p>\n

Select Board Chair Maureen Cranson brought the issue to the board on Jan. 3 on behalf of Berube\u2019s Roadside Kitchen, which has been in town for many years and in the same location for seven years without complaints.<\/p>\n

While food trucks need to get annual permits, Cranson said making them go before the Zoning Board for a hearing, as well as pay more than $400 in mailing to notify neighbors of a public hearing, is \u201conerous for a small business.\u201d She added, \u201cThat is a lot of hot dogs.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Berube and other longtime food trucks will have to go before the Zoning Board this year, the Select Board endorsed not having to go back unless there is a neighbor complaint in the future, as long as the Zoning Board agrees.<\/p>\n

Town Administrator Bill Caldwell said the one-and-done approach for the Zoning Board is the same as any other business that has \u201cthe same location, same owners and same conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other business<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 The Select Board approved hiring Activitas Inc. as the firm to conduct a sports field study. Activitas was one of two companies that submitted bids and was the low bidder; they have done work in neighboring towns, Select Board members noted.<\/p>\n

Voters approved money in fiscal 2020 for the study, before it was postponed due to COVID. There should be sufficient money to pay the $56,000 bill, especially since the building originally part of the plan is not included in this study.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The Select Board approved the Recreation Department\u2019s plan for its road race April 6. The department had 130 runners registered last year, with 111 taking part that day. Recreation Director Shari Gonsorcik said she hopes to have 130 runners show up this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
