If you have always wanted to learn, or have a young beginner of your own, please consider the vibrant AIR Community Music Program for lessons.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing birds at Gale<\/p>\n<p>HOLDEN \u2014 Explore methods for drawing birds in both studio and field. Wildlife artist Barry Van Dusen will present Drawing and Sketching Birds at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 15, in the program room at the Gale Free Library, 23 Highland St. Van Dusen will discuss the value of keeping a field sketchbook and the techniques, challenges and opportunities involved with drawing wild birds outdoors. Next, he will offer a follow-along drawing demonstration, in which he discusses bird anatomy and structure, and tips for drawing various parts of the bird. He\u2019ll end the demo with a start-tofinish drawing of a Carolina Wren, offering a detailed sequence of steps for creating a complete bird drawing. This program is for ages 16 and up. The combined all-day festivities are slated for Saturday, June 17. Events start at 10 a.m. on the fields behind Paxton Center School. Local vendors, including food and drink offerings, will be on hand, and the music is sure to be grand. Bring a chair to sit and enjoy the company. Don\u2019t forget your sunscreen.<\/p>\n<p>On the 248th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Paxton Historical Commission invites residents to learn more about this most important step toward American independence during Paxton Days.<\/p>\n<p>British Landscapes tour<\/p>\n<p>WACHUSETT \u2014 Area residents are invited to join the Wachusett Area Chamber of Commerce on a tour of England, Scotland and Wales. The tour runs from April 14-23, 2024. A travel information session with a preview of the trip\u2019s itinerary will be held Tuesday, June 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. at The Manor Banquet Facility, 42 West Boylston St., West Boylston. The trip is open to all area residents.<\/p>\n<p>Trip highlights include Edinburgh Castle, York, Chester, Llangollen, Wales, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford and London. The 10-day trip includes round-trip transportation to and from Logan Airport, roundtrip airfare, 13 meals, experienced tour guides and deluxe bus tours. For more information, contact Jen Stanovich at the Chamber at 508829-9220 or email: info@wachusettareachamber. org.<\/p>\n<p>Boston trip<\/p>\n<p>PAXTON &#8211; Space is still available on a trip to Boston on Tuesday, June 27, with area seniors and coordinator Bob Wilby.<\/p>\n<p>The trip departs at 7:15 a.m. from the Paxton Senior Center, 17 West St. The first stop is the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for The US Senate for a one-hour guided tour. Learn how the US Senate works, and the importance of the Electoral College. You will have two hours to visit this important site to our freedom and democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Lunch is at the Cheesecake Factory in Cambridge. The group will be given a special menu with an entree, and, of course, cheesecake for dessert.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch, board the Charles River Cruise Boat. On the river, participants will be able to view the skyline of Boston, Beacon Hill, the Esplanade, Back Bay, Boston University and MIT and various rowing boathouses. The trip on the Charles will take about 70 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a little time for shopping at the Cambridgeside Gallery. Departure from Cambridge is 4 p.m., with plans to be back in Paxton by 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Cost of the trip is $108 per person. Checks should be made payable to Friends of Council on Aging (FOCOA) and mailed to 11 Tanglewood Road, Paxton, MA 01612.<\/p>\n<p>Paxton Revolution<\/p>\n<p>PAXTON \u2014 The Paxton Historical Commission will be presenting A Revolution of Her Own at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 24, in the Paxton Senior Center, 17 West St. The program describes the life of the first woman Revolutionary War soldier in America, Deborah Sampson. Sampson\u2019s story, as created and performed by Judith Kalaora for History At Play, has been acclaimed on television and in newspapers. All are invited to hear her inspiring story.<\/p>\n<p>Needle felting class<\/p>\n<p>STERLING \u2014 The Sterling Cultural Council is offering an Introduction to Needle Felting class from 9 a.m. to noon June 24 at the Sterling 1835 Town Hall.<\/p>\n<p>Learn the increasingly popular art of needle felting at this special three-hour introduction to the craft. Local artist Lyn Slade of Bolton will lead you in making a miniature 2-D spring landscape. Lyn has been teaching and exhibiting her needle felted art for more than 20 years. Using the instructor\u2019s tools, you\u2019ll be able to complete a 5-by-6-inch piece to take home. Because needle felting uses very sharp and breakable tools, ages 14 and oder are welcome. Cost is $5 to cover the cost of wool. Please add a note with your email address and phone number to get back to you to confirm your spot.<\/p>\n<p>Holden Days Aug. 26<\/p>\n<p>HOLDEN \u2014 The Wachusett Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present Holden Days, a townwide celebration from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26. Now in its 43rd year, this annual event promises food, fun and entertainment for the entire family, as well as promotional opportunities for area businesses and organizations.<\/p>\n<p>A sampling of this year\u2019s activities includes free Main Stage musical performances, a kick-off parade, activities and demonstrations in the Kids Court, an auto showcase, and bandstand performances with local musicians. In addition, visitors can stroll through the Marketplace, which promotes area businesses and nonprofits, visit the Art Lot and Craft Corner, which spotlights local artisans and crafters, and enjoy breakfast and lunch at the Food Court.<\/p>\n<p>Vendor applications are now available. To reserve a space, visit www.wachusettareachamber. org.<\/p>\n<p>Paxton Garden Club<\/p>\n<p>The Paxton Garden Club is going on a bus trip Sept. 9 to Blithewold Mansion, Gardens &amp; Arboretum in Bristol, Rhode Island. The trip includes transportation, admission, private 90-minute tour of the gardens with Q&amp;A, bagged lunch, and free time to explore the gardens, mansion and gift shop. Cost is $55 per person, with a $20 nonrefundable deposit due at signup. Space is extremely limited. The gallery is open to the public weekdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Quabbin band reunion<\/p>\n<p>BARRE \u2014 The Quabbin Community Band held its first concert on the Barre Bandstand on June 10, 1973. Did you ever play with the band over the years? This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the group and QCB would love to have band alums come back to the bandstand for its Aug. 6 alumni reunion. The band will play some old favorites with music accessible to all, no matter how many years it has been. This month, we are featuring the works of <b>Anne Tisdell.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Anne grew up in Swampscott, an oceanside community north of Boston. She retired in 2016, after working as an RN and a Women\u2019s Health Nurse Practitioner for 45 years. Since retirement, Anne has had the time to pursue interests in art, music, dance and photography. Many of the paintings she creates are based on her own photographs or the photographs by friends with their permission.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, June 22, at 6 p.m., the library will hold a reception for Anne\u2019s exhibition. Anne will provide a short talk on her works and her techniques, as well as her passion for protected, threatened, vulnerable and endangered animals and plants, which are often subjects of her artwork. She will also discuss her personal history, including how she became an artist after retirement, and the importance of lifelong learning. Refreshments will be served. No registration needed.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lapsit Story Time: <\/b>10 a.m. Thursdays, age 2 and younger, in the Program Room. Join Miss Rachel for songs, short picture book stories, and more. This story time will focus on routine, repetition and early literacy skills like ABC\u2019s and 123\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><b>Preschool Story Time: <\/b>11 a.m. Thursdays, ages 3-6, in the Program Room. Puzzles, pencils and coffee provided.<\/p>\n<p>Conant Library<\/p>\n<p>STERLING \u2014 Conant Public Library, 4 Meetinghouse Hill Road, is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.<\/p>\n<p><b>Summer Reading 2023: <\/b>Summer Reading 2023 officially begins Tuesday, June 20. This program is an interactive and fun way to encourage children to continue reading during the summer. Youth ages birth to 18 years are invited to participate. Pre-readers can participate by being read to by a caregiver. Participants log their reading hours for a chance to win fun prizes in the library\u2019s raffle. The first day to register and log hours is June 20. The last day to register will be Saturday, July 22, and the last day to log hours and enter tickets into the raffle will be Thursday, Aug. 10, by 8 p.m. All participants who log hours during the program will receive a book, made possible by the Friends of the Conant Public Library. The library challenges children and families to join us in the 100 Books of Summer Reading Challenge. Beginning Tuesday, June 20, stop by the Children\u2019s Room to pick up a list of 100 of the library\u2019sr favorite children\u2019s books and start checking them out. Read all 100, or mix and match with some of your own favorites (remember, listening to books also counts), and turn in your completed list by Aug. 10th to earn a prize and a special recognition at the library.<\/p>\n<p><b>Summer Reading Kickoff: Magic with Scott Martell. <\/b>There\u2019s magic in the air! Celebrate the beginning of summer in style with a fantastic show featuring Magician Scott Martell. You\u2019ll be spellbound by dazzling tricks and surprising stunts \u2014 and of course, laugh a lot. Afterward, head next door to the library and check out some books to get your summer reading off to a great start. The show will happen at the First Church in Sterling on Wednesday, June 28, at 11 a.m. All ages; no registration required.<\/p>\n<p><b>Sterling Pages: An Intergenerational Community Writing Project. <\/b>Patrons can check out a notebook on their library card and add to the writings of friends and neighbors. This is an effort to record shared memories and favorites and continue to build a strong community. There are five notebooks with five different themes. All ages are welcome to participate. Beat boredom this winter with fun new jigsaw puzzles. The library has added adult puzzles to our collection; puzzles can be checked out for three weeks with your library card. The self-contained kits are ideal for individuals with memory-related issues and their caregivers. Each kit includes an assortment of books, activity sheets, DVDs, puzzles and more. The kits are designed to trigger special memories of life experiences and encourage interactions between individuals with memory- related issues and their caregivers. Each kit can be checked out for three weeks and renewed for an additional three weeks. This pass provides half-price admission for up to six visitors. The American Heritage Museum is a military history museum that features one of the world\u2019s largest collections of armored vehicles and tanks. For more information and to reserve a pass, call 978-422-6409.<\/p>\n<p>Richards Memorial Library<\/p>\n<p>PAXTON \u2014 The Richards Memorial Library is at 44 Richards Ave.<\/p>\n<p>The Friends of Richards Memorial Library <b>book sale <\/b>is back on a monthly basis. The next sales are Saturday, July 8, and Saturday, Aug. 12. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The lower level of the library will offer a selection of used books, DVDs and music CDs for adults and children. The Friends has spent the last year reconfiguring the lower level to provide the library staff with more space for storage and future projects.<\/p>\n<p>Materials for sale will cost $1 for hardback books, 50 cents for paperbacks, DVDs and music CDs. The Friends welcomes donation of books, DVDs and CDs for the sale, but can ONLY accept donations on the day of the sales.<\/p>\n<p>ALL MONTH<\/p>\n<p><b>Drop-in Crafts for Young People <\/b>Stick Together Community Poster Countdown to Summer Reading!
