Local students among the graduates were <b>Emily Majersky <\/b>of Holden and <b>Morgan Morris <\/b>of Rutland.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Worcester Polytechnic Institute graduates <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WORCESTER \u2014 President Grace Wang and Board of Trustees Chair William Fitzgerald presided over Worcester Polytechnic Institute\u2019s 154th Commencement exercises on May 13, marking the first time for both in their respective positions. A total of 439 students were named to the college\u2019s dean\u2019s list; 826 students were named to the merit list. Students named to the dean\u2019s list must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 for a five-class, 15-credit semester; the list is announced at the completion of the fall and spring semesters.<\/p>\n<p><b>Charlotte Flionis, Michaella Namiotka, Katelyn Shea, Ryan Singley, Cody Smith\u00a0<\/b>and <b>Madeline Snow, <\/b>all of Holden; <b>Chad <\/b><b>Bartlett <\/b>and <b>Timothy Murphy <\/b>of Paxton; <b>Hunter Johnson <\/b>of Princeton; <b>Carly Blair, Rebecca Craine, Jack Devlin <\/b>and <b>Julia Forest <\/b>of Rutland; and <b>Rocco Bovenzi, Thomas Foley, Claire Kottenstette, Josie Maldonis <\/b>and <b>Andrew Vettese <\/b>of Sterling.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WPI research projects <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WORCESTER \u2014 All students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute are required to complete a senior thesis as part of the university\u2019s distinctive project- based educational experience called the Major Qualifying Project, one that is usually team-based and often focuses on very specific issues or needs of an organization that has partnered with the university to sponsor the student\u2019s work.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to their MQP, students complete an Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP), usually in their junior year, with a team of other students across disciplines; the projects may or may not relate to the students\u2019 fields of study and are sponsored by organizations across the globe to give students real- world experience addressing problems that lie at the intersection of science and society. Approximately 85% of WPI students complete a project at one of the university\u2019s 50+ off-campus project centers located in more than 30 countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The following local students completed their MQP:<\/p>\n<p><b>Jared Minnich <\/b>of Holden, Massachusetts, majoring in electrical and computer engineering, completed the project titled Machines Building Machines;<\/p>\n<p><b>Clark Apuy <\/b>of Rutland, majoring in physics, completed the project titled SANS from a gen IV power reactor;<\/p>\n<p><b>Jared Bushnell <\/b>of Rutland, majoring in mechanical engineering, completed the project titled Design, Optimization and Testing of an FSAE Electric Racecar;<\/p>\n<p><b>Hannah Kachadoorian <\/b>of Rutland, majoring in biology and biotechnology, completed the project titled Exploring CBD for Oxidative Stress Reduction in C. Elegans;<\/p>\n<p><b>Emma Shulenburg <\/b>of Sterling, majoring in biomedical engineering, completed the project titled Alerting Risk of ACL Injury in Female Horizontal Jumps; and<\/p>\n<p><b>Isabella Landivar <\/b>of Paxton, majoring in industrial engineering, completed the project titled Sjogren Industries Inc. MQP.<\/p>\n<p>All undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to address an important societal need or issue. About two-thirds of students complete a project at one of the university\u2019s 50-plus off-campus project centers, which are located around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The following students completed these research projects:<\/p>\n<p><b>Connor Gaudette <\/b>of Holden, class of 2024, majoring in biomedical engineering and robotics engineering, completed a project titled Advancing Medjool Date Research with a Date Sorting Machine;<\/p>\n<p><b>Allison Walker <\/b>of Holden, class of 2024, majoring in biology and biotechnology, completed a project titled Water Management System Design for the Huerta Comunitaria;<\/p>\n<p><b>Philip Bui <\/b>of Holden, class of 2025, majoring in computer science, completed a project titled Turning the Nitrogen Cycle into an Augmented Reality Game;<\/p>\n<p><b>Claire Higginson <\/b>of Holden, class of 2023, majoring in robotics engineering, completed a project titled Story Bikes in Somers Town; and<\/p>\n<p><b>Kai Chhoeuk <\/b>of Holden, class of 2024, majoring in mathematical sciences, completed a project titled Fostering a Culture of Sustainability at WPI.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WPI spring dean\u2019s list <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WORCESTER \u2014 A total of 2,054 undergraduate students achieved the criteria required for WPI\u2019s spring 2023 dean\u2019s list. The criteria for the list differs from that of most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average (GPA).
