My name is Steve Cooley, and I am running for Selectman in the town of Holden. My wife and I moved to Holden nearly 18 years ago. Our daughters, sons-in-law, and seven grandchildren all live in Holden.<\/p>\n
I served 3 years in the Army, meeting Janet (she was in the Navy) while serving in Okinawa, Japan. I served in law enforcement in Los Angeles for 21 years. I have been serving in local ministry since 2004.<\/p>\n
Like many of you, I have become concerned over the past few years with some of the trends in our town government and our local schools. That\u2019s why I got involved, and that\u2019s why I\u2019m running. I believe Holden is a good place to live, not a place in need of radical transformation.<\/p>\n
Of course, any town can be improved. However, Holden is not in need of an overhaul. This is why I oppose current efforts to impose DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) and other discriminatory programs. I am against the plans of some to increase Boston\u2019s control over Holden\u2019s zoning (via legislation for MBTA Communities Zoning Law). Commuting to Boston via the MBTA from Holden is not practicable. I believe our selectmen should be available. I met hundreds of you at Holden Days last summer. I\u2019ll be holding a Q&A event at the Senior Center on April 18. I am always willing to listen to differing points of view. I don\u2019t pretend to know everything, but I am eager to learn.<\/p>\n
I believe our selectmen should treat every resident of Holden with respect. No selectman should ever seek to deprive Holdenites of their Constitutional rights. How one treats those with whom one disagrees is the mark of a leader. Leaders are not afraid of contrary ideas, or of those who hold them.<\/p>\n
I believe our Select Board (also the HMLD board) has an obligation to do all they can to ensure ample electricity for our town at the lowest possible rates. Insisting on renewables-only is impractical and expensive.<\/p>\n
