It was a lot of fun, and I have enjoyed meeting many more residents since then.”

The longtime Rutland resident grew up in suburban Boston and lived in Worcester through her 20s. She graduated from Worcester State (College) University with a degree in English and then earned a Master of Library and Information Science from Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Korstvedt said that “after a small tour of the Midwest for my husband’s career,” they returned to the area and have lived in Rutland for the past 20 years, where they raised their son, Samuel. Her husband is a professor of music history at Clark University, and Samuel lives in Worcester.

Early on in her career, Korstvedt worked in some specialized academic libraries, but said she “happily transitioned” to public libraries when they were living in Minnesota. She brings a plethora of experience with her, having worked in a large county library system, the archives at Clark, as director of the Petersham Memorial Library for five years, and at the Worcester Public Library for two years before transitioning to Gale Free Library in Holden for two years, and then returned to Worcester Public Library where she has been for the past 10 years.

She was drawn to the position of director in Princeton and said it appealed to her for a number of reasons.

“I wanted to once again work directly with the public, work directly with library collections, and have a closer connection to the community I served,” Korstvedt said. “I also felt that my wide and varied experience could bring a lot to the library and the town.”

The search committee and library staff “were all very friendly and welcoming throughout the interview process and were clearly all dedicated to the mission of the Princeton Public Library.”

“That increased my interest in the position and confirmed for me that it was a position worth pursuing,” Korstvedt continued. “Needless to say, I was very excited and energized by the opportunity when they offered me the job, even though I had mixed feelings over leaving my position at Worcester Public Library.”

Princeton Public Library Board of Trustees Chair Jane Weisman said they are “extremely pleased” that Korstvedt accepted the position, and what made her stand out in the pool of other candidates was that she “has a wide variety of skills and experience working in both public and academic libraries.

“Above her stellar qualifications, what stood out the most for the search committee were Paula’s warmth, approachability and genuine desire to build relationships with patrons directly and to focus her range of management skills in a cohesive, smaller community setting,” Wiseman communicated. “Her colleagues at the Worcester Public Library are very sorry to lose her but feel that she would be an excellent asset for Princeton. She thoroughly appreciates the beautiful Goodnow Memorial Building and the history of our charming town.”

Korstvedt said the closeknit community and historic library location were a big part of the allure of the job, as well as the interesting aspects of the job and the variety it brings.

“Part of what is fun about being a library director, especially in a small town, is that you get to do a little bit of everything — order books, attend meetings, provide training opportunities for staff, work the circulation desk, make decisions, evaluate services, put out ice melt. There is always something different,” she said. “While I am still learning the ins and outs of this particular job, I am really enjoying myself. The friendly people, the stellar views, not to mention a clock tower. What’s not to like?”

Although the recent onslaught of winter weather and resulting power outages have made for “particularly challenging” times as she begins this new chapter in her career, Korstvedt hit the ground running, but she says she is “still observing and learning.”

“The staff here already have a healthy programming schedule going, and I expect we will continue with what works and look for opportunities to expand our offerings,” she said. “It is likely that we will expand the large print selection as well as add to our ‘Library of Things’ collection.”

She said they have several interesting programs coming up this month including two “that are particularly worth mentioning.”

On Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m., local resident Alex Borsky will offer a visual presentation on his completion of three long-distance hiking trails; during school vacation week, on Feb. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., there will be indoor mini-golf at the library.

Registration is required for the mini-golf event. You can do that and find out more information about both programs and more at princetonpubliclibrary. org.

Korstvedt said she is excited to be a part of offering library patrons these and other events and opportunities to bring people together.

“More and more, libraries serve as a community center and place for people to gather together, or to work in with fewer distractions. Princeton Public Library clearly provides this to the community, and I look forward to continuing that.”

        – Paula Korstvedt

PRINCETON—New library director Paula Korstvedt was feted with a welcome celebration on Jan. 14.

[17

post-42255","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
