HOLDEN \u2014 Rarely does a matchup so close to New Year\u2019s Day take on the importance as that of Wachusett Regional High School\u2019s clash with visiting Leominster High on Jan. 10.<\/p>\n

The Mountaineer boys basketball team entered the contest with an early season record of 1-4, and so that before things spiraled further in the wrong direction, a victory would certainly have served to motivate players and coaches.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, that was not to be as Wachusett fell to the Blue Devils, 45-36.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the end of the first half was key, because we had taken a 10-point lead, and it ended up as 3 at the half. We miscommunicate on a \u20183\u2019, gave them a couple of easy baskets, didn\u2019t rebound, and now it\u2019s just 3 at the half,\u201d said WRHS head coach Tom Gibbons.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the second half we got out-toughed and out-hustled. Very disappointing. We really needed a win, but we didn\u2019t deserve it. We didn\u2019t play well enough. (Jake) Chaisson couldn\u2019t go (illness). He was sick, but other guys need to step up and do a better job. We just have to fight our way out of it. We\u2019ll get back at it and improve as a team.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve got to get better offensively, and the same with our defensive rebounding,\u201d Gibbons added. \u201cWe have to limit those breakdowns. The margin of error was very slim, so we can\u2019t have those defensive breakdowns that we had in the first half. We just have to keep on working on it and keep getting better as a team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Leading scorers on the night for Wachusett were Anthony Zingarella with 15 points, Dillon Harper with 6, and Aidan McGeary, Drew Croce and Vinny Cappabianca, who put up 5 points apiece. Zingarella tallied 12 of his game-high 15 points in the first quarter, which included three 3-pointers.<\/p>\n

Members of the 2022-2023 Wachusett Regional High boys varsity basketball team are Anthony Zingarellla, Dillon Harper, Mitchell Donkor, Joe Raeke, Jake Chaisson, Aidan McGeary, Drew Croce, Vinny Cappabianca, Tommy Rovezzi, Arturo Johnson, Erik Marziak and Chris Pickett.<\/p>\n

Team captains are McGeary, Zingarella and Chaisson.<\/p>\n

Team head coach is Tom Gibbons who is assisted by Zack Berman, Bryan Riley, Corey Haynes and Jackie Buffoli.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
