Taylor Post 189 of the American Legion, in conjunction with Project Warm-Up, has started the annual drive to collect items to be packed in backpacks and distributed homeless and in need veterans. Last year\u2019s drive resulted in the distribution of goods valued at $15,000, all made possible with the generous support of our donors.<\/p>\n<p>Items needed: new or slightly used backpacks, sweatshirts and sweatpants, new heavy socks, heavy gloves, hats, long johns top and bottom; ponchos and 50 gallon trash bags for protection from the weather and hand and foot warmers; trial\/ travel size hand sanitizer, soap, lotion, toothbrushes and toothpaste; $5-$10 gift cards for Dunkin\u2019 or Panera. This allows them to get something warm to eat and drink and to use the restrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Holiday greetings and words of encouragement are always appreciated. Items\/donations will be accepted through mid-January.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like us to do the shopping you can send a check with \u201cVets Christmas\u201d in the memo. Drop off items to the Legion Post at 32 School St., Sterling, or mail checks to Hiram O. Taylor Post 189, P.O. Participants include Linda Spencer, Cheryl Rossier, Loretta Mederios, Sid Solomon, Susan Kenny and Irena Russell. The gallery is open to the public weekdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\n        <b>Wachusett Reservoir Hike<\/b>\n      <\/p>\n<p>Get to know the Wachusett Reservoir with hikes to rewarding shoreline views of the water supply that provides clean drinking water to more than 3 million people. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and bring water. In the case of inclement weather, hikes may be canceled or modified. About 2 miles to the shore of Horseshoe Cove and back.<\/p>\n<p>\n        <b>Grange supper<\/b>\n      <\/p>\n<p>STERLING \u2014 Sterling Grange is holding a public supper on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Sterling Senior Center, 36 Muddy Pond Road, at 5:30 p.m. Ham, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, tossed salad, and brownie and ice cream will be served. Cost is $15 for adults, $8 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 and younger. Proceeds will benefit the Grange Hall Renovation Fund and community service projects. Take a gingerbread kid template and color, collage, paint \u2014 disguise your creation any way you like. Entries will be displayed for the month of December; all artists will receive a token prize.<\/p>\n<p><b>International Snack Bags. <\/b>Each bag includes snacks from a particular country, suggestions of books set in that country, and fun facts. International snack bags will be available at the library beginning Tuesday, Dec. 27, and will continue while supplies last. Open to kids of all ages, no registration required.<\/p>\n<p>\n        <b>Build- A- Palooza.<\/b>\n      <\/p>\n<p>10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27. Like to build things? Create all day at the library using LEGOs, Keva planks, MagnaTiles and more. Open to all ages, no registration required.<\/p>\n<p>\n        <b>Explorers\u2019 Club: Winter. 4 p.m.<\/b>\n      <\/p>\n<p>Wednesday, Dec. 28. The club will talk about winter traditions around the world and welcome winter with games and crafts to light up the dark. For children in grades 1-4; registration required.<\/p>\n<p><b>Mini Air-Dry Clay Creations. <\/b>1-3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29. Spend the afternoon creating miniature air-dry clay creations, while supplies last. Open to kids of all ages, no registration required.<\/p>\n<p><b>Memory Kits. <\/b>The library has added Memory Kits to its collection of nontraditional items for patrons to check out. The self-contained kits are ideal for individuals with memory- related issues and their caregivers. Each kit includes an assortment of books, activity sheets, DVDs, puzzles and more. The kits are designed to trigger special memories of life experiences and encourage interactions between individuals with memory-related issues and their caregivers. Each kit can be checked out for three weeks and renewed for an additional three weeks. Start fresh in the new year! Jenna Elliott is the founder of The Naked Flower, Professional Organizers. She has been an organizer and re-designer for more than 19 years and works with a variety of clients, in the office and in the home. This interactive workshop will get you focused on your organizing goals. She will share tips on new ways to think about your stuff, creating better habits to help you tackle the clutter, and utilizing your calendar and to-do list more effectively. Registration required. Copies of the book will be available at the library. No registration required.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cWalking to Wachusett\u201d with Bob Young. <\/b>6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23. Join Fitchburg resident Bob Young for a presentation of his re-enactment of the journey taken by Henry David Thoreau when he walked to Mt. Wachusett from Concord in 1842. While researching a trip to Mount Katahdin in Maine, Bob came across Thoreau\u2019s \u201cWalking to Wachusett\u201d essay and decided to study it further. To experience Thoreau\u2019s trip, he decided to walk the same route to capture in observations and photographs his thoughts and feelings about the historic, but little-known journey. Participants will play some games, and craft dragon eggs. Open to confirmed fans and those who want to try something new; children should have read at least the first book, <i>The Dragonet Prophecy, <\/i>in the original or graphic novel format before the meeting.
