Seven-run rally sparks 9-1 win for Mountaineer softball

HOLDEN — The Wachusett Regional High School varsity softball team erupted for 7 runs in the home half of the fourth inning, leading the Mountaineer girls to a 9-1 victory over Leominster High on April 14. The victory over the Blue Devils kept Wachusett’s undefeated streak alive at 5-0. The team now moves on, with nine out of its next 10 matchups on the road against a number of top tier opponents looking to knock off the red-hot green and white.

Pan-Mass Challenge sets $70M fundraising goal

BOSTON — After raising an unprecedented $69 million in 2022, the Pan-Mass Challenge, the two-day bikea- thon across Massachusetts that raises more money for charity than any other single athletic event in the country, intends to lift the fundraising bar once again. The organization recently announced its 2023 fundraising goal for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute: a record $70 million.

HOLDEN — Inscribed on the side of the Wachusett Regional High third base dugout is signage reminding all of the celebrated 2019 softball season when the Mountaineer girls took home a Division 1 state title with an unblemished record of 25-0. Keeping the memory alive has been an inspiration for teams such as this year’s 2023 edition, which follows a stellar 22-3 record just 12 months ago.

HOLDEN — High school spring sports are back, and with their return comes typically high expectations for Wachusett Regional High School teams. One squad to keep an eye on in 2023 is the WRHS varsity baseball team, and why not? A season ago, head coach Jeff Kodys led an intrepid band of Mountaineers to a hearty 13-8 record, spearheaded by a cast of largely juniors who now return to their final season wearing the green and white.
