Has everyone thawed out from the icy polar vortex that froze our eyeballs the moment we stepped outside this past weekend? Yes? Good. I was fortunate not to lose power, other than a 20-second blip on Friday.

All of us want our communities to hold peaceful, inclusive and fair elections, and, thanks to the hardworking election clerks, poll workers and others on the front lines, we can all take pride in the integrity of our local elections this year.

It was wonderful to see the holiday spirit at the Friends of the Conant Public Library Arts & Crafts Show, held Nov. 19 at the First Church in Sterling. A record number of shoppers found a wide variety of high-quality art and craft items made by local artisans.

As I was preparing to volunteer to work at the polls for this year’s November election, I was struck by the reports in the news from around the country of expressions of anger and hate towards poll workers.
