Passion for planet sparks Environment Club

HOLDEN — One local student’s passion for the planet motivated her to form a new club at her school. Mayo Elementary School fourth-grader Clementine Doyle-Bouvier approached Principal Carla Squier about wanting to do more for Mayo and the environment.

Rutland looking at possible $2M override

RUTLAND — Taxpayers may be looking at an override on the order of $2 million this spring in order to keep town services and avoid deep cuts that have been on the table. With concerns about costs such as the proposed Wachusett Regional school budget, which ups Rutland’s school assessment substantially, the Select Board and Finance Committee met several times in the past weeks as the boards continue to crunch numbers and look at options.

Art teacher leaves lasting legacy

Longtime Mountview teacher Lou Lucas remembered HOLDEN — Former students and others who knew him had nothing but good things to say about Lou Lucas, the beloved longtime Mountview Middle School art teacher who passed away at the age of 85 last month. “Everybody loved him,” said his wife of 38 years, Carol Lucas.

Holden stance on multifamily housing is disappointing

As a Holden resident, I was dismayed to read that Holden refuses to comply with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s zoning regulation encouraging more multifamily housing (i.e., apartments) in communities near commuter rail. While there are legitimate concerns regarding town services and school enrollment, Town Manager Peter Lukes cited none of these, but was quoted as saying that “it won’t fit the character of neighborhoods” in Holden.

HOLDEN — The Holden Democratic Town Committee announces the recipients of the annual Good Neighbor Award, this year its 28. The award honors citizens of the town who have made significant and/or long term contributions to the community through their volunteer activities. It is an opportunity for friends and neighbors to say “thank you” to those people who have touched our lives through what they have given to the community.

Wachusett science fair winners

HOLDEN — The 68th Annual Wachusett Regional High School Science Fair was held March 1. Forty students from the high school participated, and the top 12 students won awards and competed at the Worcester Regional Science and Engineering Fair, which was held at WPI March 10. The winners are listed below with their placement in our school fair, their towns, and project titles.

PAXTON — The Paxton Woman’s Club is offering two $1,000 scholarships for graduating Paxton high school seniors. An applicant must be a Paxton resident, must be a high school senior graduating this year, and must be pursuing their education at a college or an institute of higher vocational training.
