STERLING — Matt Stelmach recently took over as general manager of the Sterling Municipal Light Department, a move that he said “has honestly felt, to me, like coming home.” The former longtime town resident, who is looking to return to living in Sterling, officially took over the helm at SMLD on March 27, but he is no stranger to the light department and town workings. Stelmach was elected to the SMLD Board of Commissioners in 2009 and served three 3-year terms until 2018, six of those years as chair.

HOLDEN — The glimpse of warmer weather last week revealed that the Holden Community Garden Committee is hard at work planning to expand this spring. The group hopes to double the number of garden plots available to the public, from 11 to 23; add raised beds for those who have difficulty gardening at ground level; and install a drip irrigation system to conserve water.

HOLDEN — The Wachusett Regional High School varsity softball team erupted for 7 runs in the home half of the fourth inning, leading the Mountaineer girls to a 9-1 victory over Leominster High on April 14. The victory over the Blue Devils kept Wachusett’s undefeated streak alive at 5-0. The team now moves on, with nine out of its next 10 matchups on the road against a number of top tier opponents looking to knock off the red-hot green and white.

A recent post on the “Steven B Cooley for Holden Selectman” Facebook page includes these statements: “Wind and solar are both obsolete technologies … How can we run a modern economy on intermittent energy sources? … ask a liberal that question, his answer will be ‘batteries.’ Power can be stored in batteries. We all do this every day, storing tiny amounts … But our energy demands are almost unfathomably large … You might as well rely on pixie dust as on batteries.”
