Some questions for Holden Select Board and School Committee candidates: What is the WOKE agenda and how is it being implemented in our school district or library? Define Critical Race Theory. What do we eliminate from our course of studies or our library shelves in order to “protect” our children from it? If these concepts — once they have been defined and illustrated by example — are indoctrinating kids, why are we only discovering their pernicious existence now? Could this be a nationwide effort to scare parents to death about the dangers to their children of a public school education? Should we pass laws at the district or state level to spare students the pain of learning about slavery or the treatment of indigenous peoples or the civil rights’ struggles of minorities including Blacks, women and the LBGTQ+ community? Should we forbid discussion of controversial topics? Isn’t that discussion the essence of education? I suggest you define your terms, then tell us what you believe should be ripped out of the district curriculum or the library, although that is not part of your job description.

PRINCETON — When high school student-athletes elevate their game to the level of being recognized and recruited to compete in the collegiate ranks, it largely results from determination, dedication and just plain hard work. When it’s a Division 1 school that comes calling, that only heightens the honor and recognition that a student-athlete has what it takes to face the toughest of the tough competition.

I’m definitely an old adage kind of guy. Our forebears used them to share information about nature before scientific knowledge was being taught in schools to make note of relationships that benefited them, prior to the times we live in now where we just go to the store to buy our food or lawn care products. Certainly we can and often do get a lot of rain in April, our first full month of spring, but plenty of flowers come out in April and other changes in our natural landscape in advance of the growing season. Chipmunks have woken up, and I am seeing them running along stone walls. The big snowstorm in March, which came as a surprise given how the winter started, slowed down at least temporarily the emergence and return of some animals. Recent warmer temps and rain have gotten things back on track. Spotted salamanders, spring peeper frogs and wood frogs will soon come out from the leaf litter on a rainy evening and make their march to small ponds for their annual spring mating.

HOLDEN — When the Wachusett High girls’ varsity lacrosse team netted a pair of goals in the first 90 seconds of their matchup with visiting Nashoba Regional High on April 22, it should have been taken as a harbinger of big things to come.
