Girl Scouts go international

STERLING — Girl Scout troops in the Wachusett Service Unit gathered on March 3 for the annual International Day festivities.

This year’s event took place in the First Church of Sterling parish hall. Troops each chose a country, with seven countries represented: Australia, Brazil, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, France, Ireland and Switzerland.

Girl Scouts from kindergarteners to high school sophomores in levels including Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, and Seniors got into the spirit, creating and wearing costumes and accessories that coincided with the countries their troops selected to spotlight.

A flag ceremony kicked off the program, and after they recited the Girl Scout Law and the Girl Scout Oath, the young women traveled around to each station. They got their passports stamped, played games, did crafts and made swaps, and of course sampled all of the delicious cuisine from each country.

There was fairy bread from Australia, Brazilian cheese bread, banana fritters at Djibouti, individual trifles with layers of cake and dulce de leche topped with whipped cream from the Dominican Republic, cheese and hot chocolate at France, Irish soda bread in Ireland, and, what else, Swiss chocolate fondue offered at Switzerland with a variety of accoutrements such as pretzel sticks and mini marshmallows to dip in the liquid deliciousness.
