WPI research projects

WORCESTER — All students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute are required to complete a senior thesis as part of the university’s distinctive project- based educational experience called the Major Qualifying Project, one that is usually team-based and often focuses on very specific issues or needs of an organization that has partnered with the university to sponsor the student’s work.

Prior to their MQP, students complete an Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP), usually in their junior year, with a team of other students across disciplines; the projects may or may not relate to the students’ fields of study and are sponsored by organizations across the globe to give students real- world experience addressing problems that lie at the intersection of science and society. Approximately 85% of WPI students complete a project at one of the university’s 50+ off-campus project centers located in more than 30 countries around the world.

The following local students completed their MQP:

Jared Minnich of Holden, Massachusetts, majoring in electrical and computer engineering, completed the project titled Machines Building Machines;

Emma Shulenburg of Sterling, majoring in biomedical engineering, completed the project titled Alerting Risk of ACL Injury in Female Horizontal Jumps; and

All undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to address an important societal need or issue. About two-thirds of students complete a project at one of the university’s 50-plus off-campus project centers, which are located around the world.

The following local students were on the dean’s list for spring 2023:

Philip Bui, Claire Higginson, Andrew Malnicof and Hao Wang of Holden; Isabella Landivar and Jacob Ruppert of Paxton; Sophie Brochu and Corbin Narita of Princeton; Ashley Hutchings, Devin Kachadoorian, Hannah Kachadoorian and Hannah Peloquin of Rutland; and Jared Bailey, Thomas Cox and Luke Grady of Sterling.
