Name: Paul Mattson
Position sought: Three-year seat on Rutland Select Board
Hello, I’m Paul Mattson, and I’m running for a three-year seat on the Select Board.
I have lived a lifetime in Rutland and have watched it grow and mature into the town it is today.
I grew up playing sports, being a Cub Scout and Boy Scout in the town, and graduated from Rutland Junior High, which was in the old red schoolhouse. I went on to graduate from Wachusett Regional High School and graduated from Grahm Junior college in Boston, which eventually become a part of Emerson College.
My working career involved computers, programming, systems analysis, and some technical involvement with radio and television systems.
Rutland has evolved. Our population has grown immensely over that time to the size we are today. Having worked with the town’s cable television system over the years, I have witnessed much change. Our schools have grown and continue to grow along with the population, as have our needs for services. Our public safety services have expanded, as have our basic town hall services. We have a growing senior population, which has been and continues to be served by our senior center, which could also find itself in need of growing space.
Our town’s sports have also grown accordingly, along with the need for increased space.
I feel that the town is growing at a rapid rate, and we need to hire personnel for positions that have so far gone unfulfilled, positions that are necessary for the day-to-day operation of town departments. It is an issue that needs to be studied and worked on.
Town business should be looked at, and, with the efforts if the Growth Management and Steering Committee, steps perhaps added to benefit the town’s business outlook.
