Finance, Capital committee members appointed

STERLING — The Finance and Capital committees are a bit closer to being fully staffed after three volunteers were appointed to the committees.

At its meeting Sept. 14, the Sterling Select Board appointed Paul Austin and George Handy to the Finance Committee and Liz Pape to the Capital Committee.

Pape is a member of the Council on Aging, so could not be appointed to the Finance Committee, which is the only town board that prohibits its members from serving on another board because it creates the budget.

Pape said her term on the COA ends in 2023. The Council on Aging has a term limit requirement for its members.

Pape has been a Sterling resident since 1989 and has volunteered on a variety of boards. Austin has been a resident of Sterling since 2001, although he left for three years to run a software business in Belgium. He has since retired.

Handy was not at the meeting, but he had served on the Finance Committee in the past, leaving due to a medical issue. Healthy now, he has chosen to return. Prior to serving on the Sterling Finance Committee, he served on the same board in Princeton.

The appointments leave one vacancy on the Finance Committee and two on the Capital Committee, vice chairman Joseph King told the Select Board.

In other appointments, Brian Pierce was appointed to the Energy Committee, replacing Joseph Curtin.
