Main Street work to conclude with resurfacing

HOLDEN — Work on Main Street is about more than just digging up the road. “We’re trying to get as much underground work done as possible,” Town Manager Peter Lukes said recently. He said the resurfacing project had been moved up, potentially happening in the fall, although it could be delayed until the spring of 2023. The $2.7 million project “is planned to be funded through the 2022 Transportation Improvement Program for the Central Massachusetts Metropolitan Planning Organization,” according to the Department of Transportation.

Lukes said the goal with the current work was to take care of drainage and other issues so that the road does not have to be dug up later, after resurfacing work is done.

He said the work should take a couple of months. It will include some beautification and infrastructure, such as bike lanes.

“Main Street will be tied up again, but it won’t happen again for most of our lifetimes,” he said.

As a DOT project, Holden is receiving the benefit of millions of dollars of roadwork, he noted.
