STERLING — George P. Gibbs Little League celebrates 50 years of playing ball this season.

The opening day parade and festivities held April 27 at the Rick Maypother Baseball Fields on Princeton Road was a grand slam, with youngsters and their legion of fans joined by Worcester Bravehearts mascot Jake the Lion to celebrate the special occasion.

League President Jay LaBrack mentioned during the opening ceremony that $32,000 had been donated this year by local business sponsors, a new record, and pointed out the new T-ball field that was created especially for the youngest players.
