STERLING – Select Board member David Smith said the town works on volunteerism … and they are starting early.
At their Dec. 6 meeting, members of the Select Board recognized several Boy Scouts who have been involved in Eagle Scout projects to benefit the town.
Senior Center Director Sheila Beane introduced three Scouts whose projects have been done around the center.
“Their repair work and beautification of the Senior Center landscaping is most appreciated,” Beane said.
Zachary Sweet, 17, has been a Scout for seven years and is a member of Troop 1. He built three birdhouses and two planter boxes, while refurbishing two existing planter boxes.
Colin Sweet, 17, of Troop 189, has been a Scout for about a dozen years. He said he cleaned up around some of the rock beds in front of the senior center and worked on mulch beds around six trees behind the center.
Jacob Thorogood, 18, of Troop 189, who has been a Scout since he was 7, worked on mulch around six trees in front of the center, installing edging around them to protect them, especially during mowing and other maintenance.
The work around the senior center was done mainly using donations and a pair of GoFundMe drives.
“Thank you for the effort to beautify the senior center, something they have wanted to do for a few years,” Select Board Chair Maureen Cranson said to the young men.
Three other Scouts did work around town.
Corbin Bennett, who could not attend the meeting, helped to transform the historic Town Pound.
Adam Orsini, of Troop 1, spruced up and painted six benches at the lake, work he told the Select Board his parents funded.
Charles Smith, of Troop 1, refurbished the gazebo at Memorial Park, using mostly supplies already on hand.
“That is the bane of the town,” Cranson said about the gazebo, since it is “always being damaged.”
“Don’t stop volunteering,” Smith told the Scouts. “This town is driven by volunteers.”
