New principal settles into Chocksett

STERLING — Longtime educator Kathryn Miville came on board as interim principal at Chocksett Middle School six weeks into the 2023-24 school year.

The Barre resident took on the role in the wake of former Chocksett principal Chris LaBreck’s departure.

Miville, who is married with two teenagers, earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and has two master’s degrees, one in general education from the University of New England and one in school administration from Springfield College.

She has spent the majority of her career working in the Ashburnham-Westminster Regional School District, first as a math teacher and then as an assistant principal. When asked what she enjoys about being in education, Miville said, “Celebrating the many daily achievements, both personal and educational, of students and staff members.”

Miville officially started at Chocksett on Oct. 10 and said that so far, “Things are going as expected.”

“I have settled into a routine and feel welcomed.”

She said she was drawn to the fifth- through eighth-grade middle school because it “has the small-school sense of community with strong relationships between staff, students and parents, coupled with the benefits and resources of a larger district.”

When it comes to her goals and plans for the coming school year, Miville said they are: “To get to know the staff, students and families of Chocksett; oversee the daily operations of the school to ensure we have a safe, respectful, happy and productive learning environment; and continue to support the district initiatives of implementing high quality curriculum and teacher effectiveness in every classroom.”
