HOLDEN — The Mountview Middle School Mustangs recently captured the first Wachusett District Middle School Championship.
Nineteen players from seventh and eighth grade make up the girls soccer team:
Goalie Emma Sposato #1; captain Emma Peterson #20; captain Kerry Connor #21; captain Lilly Groccia #14; captain Chloe Bergeron #4; and Raegan Frenger #13, Luna Kozac #2, Emme Roberts #12, Emmi deLeon #18, Ella Shiner #16, Grace Harris #11, Hazel Shiner #8, Hannah Downie #5, Addy LaPan #17, Thea McCaughey #9, Sofia Vincent #6, Emily Robillard #15, Natalie Brisbois #10 and Ryleigh Ginnity #3.
Coach Sherry Gelardi has two assistant coaches, Andrea Gelardi and Jennah Gelardi.
The team practiced weekly in Holden at Mountview Middle School, honing their skills on the pitch.
During the regular season, the girls play 18 games, ending with a record of 16 wins, 1 tie and 1 loss.
The Mustangs’ first playoff game was against Paxton Middle School. That game went to overtime with no score. But Mountview Middle School was not to be denied, winning the match in overtime, 3-2, on point kicks.
The championship game found the Mustangs playing against Central Tree Middle School, on a very cold Monday afternoon, Nov. 13. Wachusett Regional High School hosted the game.
The Mountview Mustangs again faced down a tough competitor, winning the championship 1–0 on a late second half goal by Emma Peterson.
