Durant to face Zlotnick for state senate seat

The state senate seat Ann Gobi gave up to take the role of the Massachusetts director of rural affairs will be filled in the Nov. 7 special election.

Voters will choose between Peter Durant, who won the Republican primary Oct. 10, and Jonathan Zlotnick, who was not opposed in the Democratic primary.

Durant prevailed in the wide-ranging, 22-community district primary over Bruce Chester of Gardner. Durant, of Spencer, and Zlotnick, of Gardner, will appear on the ballot.

The districtwide totals put Durant substantially ahead of Chester, with Durant taking about 60% of the votes.

In the Wachusett towns, Durant prevailed in Holden 292 to 262, Paxton 75 to 28, Princeton 57 to 35, and Rutland 181 to 58, while in Sterling Chester won 88 to 53.

Zlotnick, running unopposed, still drew Democratic voters to the polls, and in Holden garnered 231, Paxton 38, Princeton, 118, Rutland 86 and Sterling 57.

In a Facebook post, Durant stated he was honored by the trust the voters placed in him in the Republican primary.

“I look forward to carrying their voice with me on to November and into the State Senate,” he stated.
