A memorable day at Eagle Lake

HOLDEN — A nice group of friends, family and Friends of Eagle Lake gathered on Monday, Oct. 2, to remember and celebrate an Eagle Scout project done at Eagle Lake Beach in 1998.

Back then, Troop 182 Boy Scout Mark Parella considered that installing a tiered wall would slow down the natural beach erosion that required annual sand replenishments. He enlisted Scouts, friends and family (including famed local landscaper Brian Hughes) to plan, get necessary approvals and then execute the work.

A plaque honoring Mark’s work is installed at the beach.

The work was a remarkable achievement that has stood the test of time and remains successful in its goal. Most notably, Mark has carried out the Scout Oath, demonstrated by Scoutmaster Dennis Melendy, in an exemplary manner in his personal life. Mark has served in the military & other government roles, as well as being a world class mountaineer, scaling Mount Everest and Mount Denali, as well as many other famous peaks.

The group was blessed to honor him in this way.

Scout Oath: “On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”
