Wachusett budget waits on Paxton, Princeton

REGION — With three of the five Wachusett Regional School District towns having approved the school budget and town assessments at their annual town meetings, the final votes will come in June.

Holden approved its assessment May 15, Sterling on May 1 and Rutland on May 6, with its approval contingent on an override that passed in the town’s election.

But still to come is Paxton’s June 5 annual town meeting, and Princeton’s annual town meeting is slated for June 20.

The district must win four of the five towns to have its budget set. If one town does not fund it, the community would be forced to accept the budget approved by the four other towns.

With the towns having expressed concern about the budget every year, and this year setting a 4% target, the $116 million Wachusett budget is a majority of each town’s spending.

Typically, the schools manage to get at least the four minimum. But many final planning issues may remain waiting on the results of the June votes with the new fiscal year starting July 1.
