Questions have been raised recently concerning the development of curriculum in the Wachusett School District.
TheDepartmentofElementaryandSecondary Education establishes guidelines for the curriculum according to grade level and prepares the statewide tests to determine the knowledge level of each student periodically throughout their school experience, prior to graduation.
The DESE also must approve any changes in the Wachusett District Regional Agreement before they can be implemented.
The teachers’ union does not control the curriculum. The union’s purpose is to negotiate salary and working conditions. The WRSD School Committee must approve all union contracts before they can be implemented.
Parent Advisory Committees have held meetings at the Holden schools, grade 1 through grade 8, for many years. These meetings are held once a month during the academic year.
I served on the Mayo and Mountview Advisory Committees for a number of years, and found the staff and administration willing to respond to any questions or suggestions.
The Wachusett Regional School District School Committee has a subcommittee that works on policies regarding education. Again, this committee meets regularly and would welcome input from members of the public.
