Paxton reschedules town meeting

PAXTON — Adjusting to accommodate better budgeting numbers, Paxton is moving its annual town meeting from May to June 5 this year.

With state budget figures being later than usual because of the new governor, plus working on town and school figures, voters will tackle the town budget and other business on June 5 at 7 p.m. at the Paxton Center School.

The Select Board voted at a March 8 meeting to make the change, taking advantage of a state law — Chapter 39 Section 9 — that allows the delay in the meeting normally held the first Monday of May under town bylaws.

The town election will still be held as usual, the second Monday in May, this year on May 8.

In January, the Select Board had set the town meeting for May, in response to Town Administrator Heather Munroe’s research into whether the date was a town bylaw. That was indeed the case, with the bylaw having been adopted March 5, 1973.

The board had considered beginning the town meeting and conducting what business it could without firm budget figures from the state, and then recessing the meeting to a later date.

But because of the state law allowing the change to the meeting date, despite the bylaw, the board was able to reset the date to June.
