PAXTON — For the second year in a row under the leadership of Orville Sheldon and Richard Bedard, 10 Paxton veterans spoke to the students of the three sixth grade classrooms at Paxton Center School about Veteran’s Day.
On Wednesday, Nov. 9, the group headed to the school to explain the meaning of Veterans’ Day and the importance of how veterans served our country. Students were urged to thank any veteran for their service.
At the town’s latest census, Paxton has 193 veterans living inside its borders.
One of our veterans, Sam Sespaniak, produced a 10-page document explaining the many monuments in town that honor the numerous veterans who fought in wars and never came home. His document also included information on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Each student, as well as the teacher, received a copy of Sespaniak’s work.
The veterans shared stories about their personal experiences serving in the Armed Forces for the Unites States. They explained some of the benefits of a military life, and told students about the education and job training of today’s military.
“We want our young people to recognize a veteran and to say thank you to them for their service,” said the group.
All 10 veterans were excited about their experience with the young students, and were all impressed with the quality of teachers who are working with the young students at Paxton Center School.
