Cultural Council reports to Select Board

STERLING — As part of the Select Board’s efforts to publicize other boards and commissions that do not get the publicity it does, members invite representatives of other groups to present a report during their televised meetings.

At the Sept. 14 meeting, the Cultural Council got to add its 2 cents, with chair Rosanne Mapp presenting the report.

While the Cultural Council is taking applications for grants, through Oct. 15, the more immediate news is that the second annual Art in the Park celebration is set for Saturday, Oct. 1; the rain date is Oct. 15.

Mapp said the music and art event will be held in Memorial Park, with a children’s art show set up in the 1835 Town Hall.

Applications are still being taken for people who want to participate. To show and sell your art, or to perform, email ccofsterling@ comcast.net. Mapp said there is no fee to participate.

Artists of all kinds — and organizations looking to put on cultural programs — are invited to submit an application for a cultural grant. The Sterling Cultural Council gets money from the Mass. Cultural Council, as well as an appropriation at town meeting from the town. This year, the town appropriated $4,500 to add to the $3,000-plus received from the state.

Grant applications are taken once a year. In the past, organizations that received grants have included the Sterling Recreation Commission for the summer concerts in Memorial Park, the Sterling Senior Center for special programs, the Sterling Historical Society for programs at the old school house, the Sterling Garden Club and the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden.

Votes on this year’s applications will be done by the end of December, Mapp said.
